SES logo (see chart 2)

The SES logo is worked over the next 10 rows. Depending on your preference, you can knit 10 rows of white and then embroider the letters in blue yarn using duplicate stitch OR you can knit the letters directly into the hat, following the chart.

If knitting: knit all odd numbered rows and purl all even numbered rows; read odd numbered rows from right to left and read even numbered rows from left to right.

You will be knitting with both white and blue yarn at the same time. The colour that isn't being worked is carried loosely across the back of the knitting. Be very careful not to pull yarn too tight as you change colours - spread out the stitches on the right needle every time you change colours. If there is more than five stitches between colour changes, twist the two yarns once, to prevent tangles.

Centre the SES letters – knit 45 (49) stitches in white before starting the chart.

Cut the yarn so you have a tail of about 40cm. Using the tapestry needle, thread the yarn tail through the remaining stitches and draw tight. Sew up the side seams. If you use mattress stitch, your seam will be virtually invisible. Weave in the yarn tails and roll up the brim.

Feel free to make as many of these hats as you like to give to SES volunteers. Under no circumstances may hats be sold unless you have written permission from both Margaret Bozik and SES Victoria. Margaret Bozik will only give permission to sell hats if you have first obtained permission from the SES and all proceeds from sale go to the SES.

Hi Marg

I can see I might get a few requests for this down at our unit. Thanks for doing the hard work for me - I knit for fundraising for our unit and I always seem to run out of time
